Nagarjuna Sagar Dam

Nagarjuna Sagar Dam stands across river Krishna between Nalgonda district and Guntur district. The dam was constructed between 1955 and 1967, during that time it was the tallest masonry dam in the world. It's height is 124m and 1550m long. The reservoir covers an area of 200,000 sq. kms. The reservoir having occupied the Krishna river valley has submerged the ancient Buddhist site and created several island out of hill tops including Nagarjunakonda- the fort hill.

As we traveled from Vijayapuri on left bank to Anupu on right bank, we passed by the dam, Normally this season there's no outflow. During the rainy season, when the gates are open and water is gushing out, the dam and river create a glorious sight. During winters one can see water birds nesting here.. probably they have migrated from colder places.

Dam 

This is an abandoned bridge, its top surface barely 35 - 40 feet from the riverbed. The bridge is damaged hence out of service. I guess one can still approach it and get a good view of the dam.

Further away from the dam is the new bridge, much higher from the river bed. The highway has light traffic, so the bridge also serves as a mini picnic spot ..cart vendors sell snacks and fruit juices ..travelers stop by for a refreshing break.
